The
SAHELI was formed in 2004 in response to the request from local poor women
in Basta and Rasgovindpur CD Blocks of Balasore and Mayurbhanj districts of
Odisha, India.
Ms. Dalia Antony, the Founder President of SAHELI started her community
intervention in 2004 in these areas after completing her postgraduate degree
in Social Work (MSW). She worked with poor women and adolescent girls
belonging to the Scheduled Tribes/Adivasis and other marginalized sections
of population.
She worked initially on the self-help group (SHG) mode. Later, after three
years the leaders of the SHGs formally and informally requested to float an
organization for women to defend their rights in the backdrop of the
increasing denial of human and sexual health rights of women as well as in
the context of increasing gender based violence and early marriages. This
request was after their realization that the SHG mode of operation has
limitations and there was no women s organization operating in the target
area addressing the gender and sexual and reproductive rights (SRHR) of
women. Thus, the SAHEI was formed in 2004 as an organization for and by
women, got registered as a not-for-profit organization in 2008 and got
permanent registration with the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of
India in 2011to receive foreign contributions under the Foreign Contribution
(Regulations) Act (FCRA), 2010.
The organization has ever since its inception in 2004 been working to
protect the rights of women.
The office of the organisation is located at Hassanpur (a village) in
Bidyadharpur, Basta (CD Block), Balasore (district), Odisha, India. |
